Lists To Be Honest...

5 Summer Items that are Saving my Life Right Now

This summer has been a lot different than most. I’ve dedicated a lot of time to be with my family and with the pandemic nearing its end (hopefully…)we’ve been taking Savannah everywhere and anywhere we can think of – costco, coffee runs, park dates, zoo trips, etc. throughout all of this, we have been spending a loooot of time outdoors and with some record highs this summer, I truly never thought I’d see the day! I’m a huuuuge weeny when it comes to the heat and I truthfully haven’t spent as much time outdoors as I should since I was in high school and going to the pool every day to work on my tan! And back then, lets be honest, I was deeeefinitely not practicing safety measures when lounging in the sun (the amount of sun tanning oil I used to use should seriously be considered criminal😩) but as I’ve gotten older, I’ve become much more conscious of the state of my health. That said, now knowing what the lasting effects a sun burn can have on your body and your overall health long term has spurred me into learning more about safety in the sun – especially when it comes to toddlers and their fair, dainty skin. We are about halfway through the summer and we have managed to evade sunburns and sunstroke here at the Roberts but it wouldn’t be possible with out these 5 products that I honestly sweat by at this point! If you’re interested, take a look below at the 5 summer items that are saving my life right now! If you have any products that you absolutely swear by, PLEEASE let me know in the comments below! I’m always looking for new things to try out!

  1. Badger – SPF 30 Baby Natural Mineral Sunscreen – Broad Spectrum & Water Resistant

If you remember, quite a while ago I talked about my decision to switch sunscreens for Savannah after I took a deep dive into the Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) toxicity ratings on the products we use (if you ever want to give yourself a slight panic attack, take a look for yourself) . The sunscreen we had been using since she was a baby had worked great up that point, but was rated a 6 on a scale of 1 -10 and I just knew we could do better than that. I had heard about the brand Badger from another blogger and I loved that it was rated a 1 on the EWG scale but I had zero clue if it was actually going to work. After about a month of using it literally every day, I can say its hands down my favorite sunscreen! Savy has an incredibly fair complexion with her auburn hair so keeping her skin safe is a big deal for me – its also important to me that anything I put on her body regularly is safe from toxins since a child’s skin absorbs way more and at a faster rate than an adults. If you’re lookin for a safe sunscreen that works, I would give this one a shot! The EWG’s website also has a section on their recommended safe sunscreens for adults and for babies/kids if you would like to explore other options too! Also, this specific one has chamomile and calendula as the main ingredients and boy do they smell nice💛

2. Amazon Baby Sun Hat

I got this hat for Savannah for our Utah trip thinking it would be a quick fix to a problem and it turns out it’s a staple in her summer wardrobe now! The hat is incredibly simple but completely covers her head, face, ears, and most of the back of her neck. There are way better hats out there that can be worn in water and completely cover the backs of their necks, so maybe we’ll look into those as she gets older. For now though, I make sure to bring this hat everywhere with us! For the most part she’s pretty comfortable wearing it, only having the occasional tantrum to tear it off, but it protects her little auburn head from any potential burns!

3. CamelBak Eddy+ Kids Water Bottle

My sister got her this water bottle for her first birthday and lets just say it comes absolutely everywhere with us! Anytime we go in the car, her little water bottle is coming with us. It’s not insulated like her hydro flask, but it doesn’t leak and carries a good amount of water. Since I weaned Savy from breastfeeding, she hasn’t taken to drinking much of anything besides water (her pediatrician is well aware and assures us that milk at this age while encouraged, isn’t necessarily needed!) Because of that, I always make sure to bring any water with me wherever we go so she stays hydrated. While most times she prefers drinking from my water bottle, during car rides its super convenient to give her her own – especially on the super hot days. Trev and I have found that actively bringing our water bottle with us wherever we go gets us to drink more water, and when we drink more water we feel more alert, calm, and ready for the day! I want to try and help Savy build these habits from a young age so hopefully as she grows older they just become second nature.

4. Zara Leather Sandals

I got these sandals for Savannah at the beginning of the summer thinking they would be a super cute addition to her wardrobe, but they have quickly turned into her main summer shoes! Not only are they incredibly cute (I have a similar pair from Avarcas That I love to match her with🥺) but they are so sturdy and very kid friendly! When I tell you Savannah has taken an entire yogurt container and spread it over both shoes and that I was able to just wipe it all off with just water – I’m not kidding. Anything that goes on wipes off incredibly easily, and never leaves behind a water mark of any kind! When I got them I felt like I definitely splurged (something about spending $40 on toddler shoes just makes me cringe a little😰) but they have since gone on sale and I cant recommend them enough! Plus, Savannah loooves putting them on and shes able to run around like shes barefoot with them on! Im definitely going to be getting her more once she grows out of these!

5. Target Tank Top

Ok, this one is for me but I just had to throw it in the mix because I’m pretty sure I wear it 3-4 times a week! If you’re like me and hate spending money on summer clothes (I mean come on, you’re spending the same amount of money on a tank top of minimal fabric as you would a sweater – WHY) then you know how wonderful it is to find a tank top for $8 that not only lasts, but fits like a dream! This tank is super loose fitting but is still flattering and so so comfortable. I don’t know why I got the white tank top, its like I forgot I’m with a toddler 24/7, but it does make me feel more put together even when I’m wearing jean shorts and there’s some food stains on the front 😂 I definitely recommend some target tank tops though if you’re looking for an inexpensive way to expand your summer wardrobe! Coming from a girl that rotates the same 5 shirts all summer, this one has made the cut!

So, this list isn’t very extensive but as Savannah gets older and we are venturing out into the world more and more, I have found that less is so much more! Attempting to remember to bring more than 5 items when we leave the house quickly stressed me out and often times than not can spoil an outing with the fam bam ( guilty🥲) so understanding what’s *truly* going to make your day better (and safe!) is important to figure out – for us anyways! As she gets older I’m sure this list is going to change and maybe even expand, but for a 1.5 year old, this is it!

What are some things that you cant live without in the summer time? It can be for you or your littles! I’d love to hear in the comments below!💛
