Our little Savannah Bee Apricity Roberts turned 6 months this month. As of today, she is 6 months and 7 days and I am just reeling from how fast this time has just gone by! I have literally been by her side since the moment she was born, yet some how I still feel like I’m missing stuff. Any other mama’s out there understand what I’m saying? So, this month I have decided to just go all out and just record EVERYTHING. If I see it and I think its cute, I’m takin a picture or a video and just making a permanent memory of it! In the beginning I was just so focused on living in the moment and absorbing all of it, but I’ve officially gotten to the phase of needing to digitize everything instead! So, with that, Trev gave me the wonderful idea of making my own series called, “What’s Goin on This Week,” – still workshopin the name. I most likely wont do this every week, but I want to do it when something significant is happening! For instance, this week she has officially started solids (😭) and you know me, I have done my research and I’m taking all kinds of precautions because my new fear at this is age is…choking. I’m assuming that each age is going to create new fears and because I’m figuring out I’m going to be THAT mom that is going to cry when her little baby falls down for the first time, I’m just doing what I can to put those fears at bay – meaning, supplying myself with an army of research on the Do’s and Don’t’s of starting solids!
There are a plethora of food options for babies when they start solids. From delivery subscriptions, to just making your own baby foods, I have landed in the middle of just buying individual jars/pouches so we can try out different brands, different foods, and just getting an overall feel for the consistency of the food and how Savannah is reacting to it all. For now anyways! Throughout this whole journey, I have never made like I am an expert at any of this and I’m absolutely not beginning now! I want to just learn everything I can first and then mold this step into something that fits our family. Maybe jars and pouches will be the perfect fit! Or maybe I’ll try to make my own! I’m not committing to anything until we are comfortable with feeding her solids first. Our pediatrician told me at her 4 month check up that we were welcome to start solids, just for fun. Trev and I agreed that while the pictures would be priceless, our nerves weren’t quite ready for it so we just decided to wait until she turned 6 months. We were told that months 6-9 were basically training months, meaning she is learning how to eat solids and just getting familiar with this new consistency and delivery of food. Breastmilk is still going to be her #1 source of nutrition though, so I need to make sure I keep up her feedings just as normal – just incorporate eating solids once a day. Months 9 and up are when we focus on the nutrition aspect of the solids. As of now, I have no idea what that looks like but I plan on just learning as much about this process as I can as we move forward. You know, it never ceases to amaze me how crazy it is that we are literally teaching her the most basic aspects of living. I think we all just kind of assume babies are hardwired to naturally know how to do these things (I mean I was anyways..) but yeah, no, that’s not even close to the truth. Just the mere act of teaching her how to keep the food in her mouth and swallow rather than push it out with her tongue and play with it with her hands is just one simple example. Anyways! Since we just started this whole process, I don’t have a whole lot to say so I’m just going to take you through what we’ve established so far!
Baby Food Brands
Between asking for my friends favorite baby food brands and looking at bloggers top picks, since we have decided that we aren’t ready to make our own food for Savannah just yet, I’ve compiled a little list of brands that I want to try out! I plan to only buy organic (my baby is going to be eating better than all of us for sure) and the fresher the better! I don’t know how I feel about buying from Amazon yet because A) I’m just not a huge fan of Amazon to begin with, and B) I really don’t know if I’m a fan of buying food through Amazon…So, I want to purchase from either stores around here or I wouldn’t be completely opposed to a delivery system! But those are mini fortunes so I’m not really going to make those a priority. Here’s what I have down so far:
- Plum Organics
- Beech Nut
- Once Upon a Farm
- Mama Bear Organics
The first 3 I can all buy at target (🙏🏼) but the last one is an exclusive Amazon brand. I haven’t heard anything about it, but it was highly rated on the site! The ingredients also looked pretty impressive! But again, I don’t know how I feel about buying baby food from Amazon…a platform where literally anyone can be a retailer….We bought 3 jars from Beech Nut and 2 pouches from Plum Organics. We have tried 2 of the jars from Beech Nut and Savannah has honestly loved each one! We’ve done Sweet Potatoes for the first 3 days and we just went to Pears yesterday and she has eaten everything we’ve given her, and best thing about it? No allergic reactions! We were pretty nervous about picking specific solids because of all of her intolerances but our pediatrician wasn’t concerned at all about it being an issue! I still am not convinced that it’s a complete non-issue, but so far we have been in the clear! Which is SUCH a nice feeling. The last brand, Once Upon a Farm, is available at target but its much more fresh than the jars or pouches so needs to be refrigerated right away. I’m assuming each one isn’t going to last long so I can see the money just kind of floating away, but I’m not opposed to it! I want to do better by Savannah. Trev and I really have come a long way with what we put into our bodies and we are still learning and evolving, but we truly owe it all to this little 6 month old Bee. If it wasn’t for her, I don’t think I would have ever survived eliminating soy AND dairy from my lifestyle. While we don’t know what we are going to do when Savannah is completely weened off of breastmilk, I know I want to keep learning so I can give her a wonderful head start on a nutritional, beneficial lifestyle.
We are only a week into this, but so far its been such a fun experience with Savannah! My overall fear of feeding her solids isn’t over because we still have quite the journey, but so far its pretty painless! And OH so cute! She seems to have mixed reactions when she’s tasting the food, but we get to see her personality shine through more and more with this! She’s not exactly eager to eat what’s on the spoon, but she’s very fascinated and I almost think she likes biting the spoon more than actually eating the puréed food which I just love! I think her personality is going to be just like her fathers, just completely willing and eager to try something new, whatever it is! She’s not at all hesitant about this next step and I don’t see that changing with any time soon 💛
